Are You Ready For Some Baseball?

Baseball Sports Lover Gifts bumpersticker

Are you ready for some baseball?  The College World Series will be in Omaha in a few days.  The ball games of course will be the focus of attention nationwide BUT there are other things to do in Omaha!    There are a wide variety of attractions throughout the city.   In the Old Market area are a few quaint galleries and shops.  There is the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, Joslyn Art Museum, Children’s Museum, Durham Museum, Holland Performing Arts Center, Orpheum Theater, Henry Doorly Zoo, and of course, the Boys Town campus!  Okay so I sound like the Chamber of Commerce and Boys Town Visitors Bureau!  It IS a good town…

There was a great deal of controversy over the “replacement” and relocation of the former home of the series.  Omaha Municipal Stadium was built in 1947, renamed “Rosenblatt Stadium” in 1964.  The renaming was in honor of Mayor, Johnny Rosenblatt who was instrumental in bringing the College World Series to Omaha. The Series was first played in Kalamazoo, Mich., and then in Wichita, Kan., but after Omaha managed to attract the event with the municipal stadium it had built in 1947 for minor-league teams, Johnny Rosenblatt and other local supporters committed to keeping it here. Over the years Omaha has invested millions more in stadium improvements.

Members of “Save Rosenblatt” believed the ball park should have been retained and remodeled.  They stated the CWS and the City of Omaha would have been better served by a remodeled Rosenblatt. However, in February 2008, after months and months of debate, Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey and the stadium committee made the decision for a new downtown stadium.  Alas, they call it progress.  So much for nostalgia.

On April 30, 2009, the city and the NCAA agreed to keep the World Series in Omaha for another 25 years through 2035. The agreement stipulated that the series be moved to the new downtown stadium by 2011.  And it’s there…

I’m not a baseball fanatic, but I do enjoy following the series.  I hope to be able to devote some time to the teams, the games and the entire event while they are here.  You can show YOUR support for the event by clicking on the above items and investing in some CWS memorabilia!
